Biology
Biology
The study of Biology allows us to develop a wider understanding of many of the issues facing the world today, e.g. global warming and health and disease. During the first year of the course you will focus on three modules.
Foundation Biology
This examines the structure of cells, how they work and divide. You will also learn how energy flows through ecosystems.
Human Health and Disease
This focuses on the way in which diseases, diet and smoking affect health and how the immune system can protect the body against disease.
Transport
You will study the mammalian cardiovascular system and the xylem and phloem systems in plants.
In Year 2 you will study a core module - Central concepts and an option module – e.g. Mammalian Physiology and Behaviour. Central Concepts examines the way in which energy is produced and used in organisms, including details of photosynthesis and respiration. You will also study nervous and hormonal control, population ecology, genetics and evolution. In Mammalian Physiology and Behaviour you will learn about mammalian nutrition, the liver and how the human body moves and the affects of ageing on the locomotory system. You will also learn how the nervous system is organised and functions, enabling you to think, see and hear. If you have an investigative, scientific mind and are committed to developing your understanding of how Biology can impact on our lives then this is a course for you. It is also a key requirement for many medical-based degree courses. Biology can also be very useful in other areas, e.g. Environmental Science, Sports Science and Sports and Leisure Management.
