Mathematics
The study of Mathematics requires an ability to visualise a problem and then use mathematical principles to solve that problem. It is a demanding subject, but one that is hugely rewarding If you are a student who may wish to follow a career in science, technology, medicine or medical sciences, then mathematics is a highly recommended subject to study.
During the first year of study you will complete the following:
- Two pure mathematics modules C1 and C2
- One applied mathematics module Statistics S1
In Year 2 two additional pure mathematics modules are studied C3 and C4 as well as another applied mathematics module, usually Mechanics M1 or Statistics S2. Entry requirements are generally an A* or an A grade at GCSE, but consideration is given to students with a strong B grade on the ‘Higher’ GCSE paper.
Classes are small, which ensures that all students receive a high degree of support in lesson time. In addition, the mathematics department prides itself on the additional support it is able to provide for its students – support that has meant that students achieve excellent results yearon- year. An AS/A level in Mathematics is an excellent qualification. It combines particularly well with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, but also complements the study of Geography, Economics and Business Studies since they too have a degrees of mathematical content. Its emphasis on problem solving and refining and improving mathematical models makes it a very ‘transferable’ subject, which can be used in all careers.
