History
History
To shape the future, we have to have an understanding of the past. History is concerned with judgement, argument and debate based on available evidence. The conclusions that you arrive at will always be tentative and open to interpretation, but if you are the sort of person who enjoys debate and can argue a point of view, this is a subject you will enjoy.
The course offers six complementary units designed to enhance and develop your understanding of modern world history. Examples of areas of study include:
- Totalitarian Regimes
- Ideology and Practice
- The Sixties - Social and Cultural Revolution
- The Representation and Democracy in Britain
- Russia: 1941-1991 Triumph and Collapse
Each area of study has shaped the world we live in today. To understand them is to understand our world today. We are looking for students with enquiring minds, who are interested in how past events have had an influence on the world we live in today. The AS/A level course will also give you the opportunity to visit northern France and the battlefield sites of the First World War. The demands of creating, sustaining and supporting a point of view by reference to source material makes history a rigorous and popular subject for undergraduate study. Careers in law, politics, teaching and local government are particularly open to a student with a history background.
